Lessons For the Classroom

When designing lessons for effective classroom instruction I've learned to keep in mind that:

• a new language should be used for communication,

• language learning occurs through meaningful and significant use,

• how much English the learners are exposed to in their daily environment,

• age when second language instruction began and consistency of instruction over time,

• age of learner as the current instruction takes place makes a difference to the approach, techniques and topics/themes used during instruction

• cultural, social, and cognitive processes affect language and academic development,

• a students' home language and other languages learned impact their acquisition of English

Lessons shared in this website were designed for specific classroom. Some lessons where designed for ESL settings and others for EFL settings. Your classroom and students may have quite different needs - so feel free to adapt in ways that fit your students.
